If you find yourself at the very beginning of an issue with little or no information, the following search engines available on the Internet will help you retrieve documents relating to your search request.

A. YAHOO
YAHOO is one of the best ways to access information. Yahoo functions like a "yellow pages" of the Internet. It is divided into various categories, including Government:Law and numerous web sites are listed under each category. If you are unsure of the correct category, you can simply input several key terms and search both the categories and all sites. It is important to note that site links are placed on Yahoo at the discretion of its administrators. Therefore, unlike other search engines which canvasses the entire net, Yahoo has, by its very nature, "edited" what is made available.

Yahoo can be found at: http://www.yahoo.com

B. Alta Vista
In contrast to Yahoo, Alta Vista enables you to search millions of web pages by term(s). You can conduct a simple search by inputting a search term or a more advanced search that utilizes Boolean search logic. The Boolean search logic on the web is similar to that of LEXIS and Westlaw.

Alta Vista can be found at: http://altavista.com

C. Findlaw - a legal search engine
Just as Yahoo is the starting point for many searches on the Internet, Findlaw is probably one of the best starting point for conducting legal Internet research.

FindLaw can be found at: http://www.findlaw.com.

D. Google
Google is widely recognized as the worlds largest search engine. Google uses its propritory PageRank™ algorithm and Hypertext - Matching analysis for each query.

E. Hieros Gamos – a legal search engine

Although there are numerous other legal search engines, Hieros Gamos is another legal search engine that deserves special mention. Hieros Gamos, a site maintained by a collection of law firms, contains many of the links referenced in Findlaw and Cornell’s LII but adds many other original documents. These documents include over 200 practice areas, numerous "Doing Business" guides as well as other types of material which are not commonly available on the Internet.

Hieros Gamos can be found at: http://www.hg.org.

F. Law Crawler – a legal search engine
The LawCrawler uses intelligent agents combined with the Google
search engine and database and other legal code and case law databases to retrieve information geared towards the specific needs of legal professionals.

Law Crawler can be found at: http://www.lawcrawler.findlaw.com
